Super Nan and You
Here's an update on Nan in Devon hospital. As most of you know, Nan has been hospitalized for twelve days (not counting the four hours she spent at home before returning to hospital).
She remains very weak and has oxygen running most of the time. Tomorrow she is going for an ECHOcardiogram in Leduc. This is a preliminary test to determine if surgery would be an option for her at this time as she has some blockage in the aorta area and this is causing the chest pain, fatigue and loss of appetite. She has told us that she wouldn't be favorable to any major surgery but would welcome something like an angioplasty, which would relieve her symptoms.
She loves her phone calls and has a phone by her bed. Her # is 780 987-8200 and she would love to hear from all of you(That was Mom).
(Rick Post) Visited Nan today. She is feeling pretty good. I say that because she immediately told me a story about her beating a teacher when Uncle Dan was in grade 1. Something about a Ms. Nelson telling Dan his ears were too big. You don't need to know all the details but know that Nan gave her 110 pounds of peed off Mommy in a school hallway and then pushed her down on a icy sidewalk. Course I might have some details wrong but you get the gist. She still has the fighting Irish in her.
She did offer me one of her T3's so I'm not sure what thats about either.
Suffice to say she likes visitors.
Hugs all round...
Rick

Vegas update part 4375
We don't really have any news, I just felt like posting something on the blog.
Well, our dear little Checkers made it through surgery just fine. He had a luxated (sp?) patella which means that his kneecap and associated muscles kept slipping to the side of his leg. He's home and supposed to be taking it easy, not supposed to be jumping around or moving. So since he's an O'Hara dog, he's crafted a bungy cord out of elastic bands, invited the rottweiler from next door over and the poodles from down the street and having a krunk party. (I don't know what that means but the teenagers on our street keep talking about it).
Other than that nothing is new. Jay O'Hara is in town for a convention and I got to see him briefly (we really enjoy seeing any family - seriously - even Jay... ; ).
I really wish we could've made it home for the Aussie invasion but it just didn't work out for us. Sorry Dave.
Hope everyone up north is doing well, we miss you all .

A little news!!
I have an annoucement to make to those that didn't make the Aussie weekend.
I have met a very special man named Austin and on Friday, he proposed to me and I accepted.
We are getting married in Hawaii, on January 13, 2010.
I hope you will welcome him into our family as his family has welcomed me into theirs.

My girls need help.
Here is the problem: Two little girls(age 8 and 10) are arriving in a new country.
In their home country they have one Grandmother, and two uncle and aunties and less than five cousins.
In this new country they have: One Great Grandmother, Grandpa Canada, Nana Canada, Auntie Lisa, Cousin Josh, Cousin Dylan, Auntie Barb, Cousin Sadie, Auntie Maureen, Uncle Nick, Auntie Angie, Auntie Pat, Uncle John, Auntie Shirley, Auntie Linda, Uncle Rob, Auntie Joan, Uncle Dan, Uncle Jack, Auntie Darlene, Auntie Sharon, Uncle Lionel, Uncle Hal, and that is before we start on the cousins, first cousins, second cousins, extra cousins and other cousins.
This seems a bit scary to me. Here is my solution.
If you have time would you make up a family tree of your family - with names, ages and interests and send it back to me at dbernhardsen@shaw.ca If possible send pictures. I will combine it all into a walking around directory for the girls. They are practicing now to remember who belongs to who but this will not only help them while there are here but should be a great keep-sake when they return.
Thanks for your help - We have four really excited Aussies coming this way.

The Ausse's are coming! The Aussie's are Coming!
That's right - David, Tracy, Paris and Ashley land in Vancouver on Sept. 15. They will be in Canada until October 25. We are planning a get-together at the Lake on Saturday, Sept. 19 - but we have booked the hall for Friday, Saturday and Sunday so that gives us a lot of time to talk, play horeshoes, walk on the beach, on the pier, ride on the swing, walk the 4F Trail, watch the birds, camp, and do whatever you want in the fresh lake air. There is plenty of camping space, so make a weekend of it. We would love to see whoever can make it. If you have questions, give me a call at 780-222-9913 or our home number 780-760-9949. Now I am going to take a tranquilizer and go to bed.

The Countdown is On
Well its only 11 days until our wedding and Lyndsay and I are getting really excited about the O'Hara's descending upon beautiful Vancouver. Its been about 25 degrees and sunny everyday for the past couple weeks.
We're planning on having a BBQ from about 5pm on at the Granville Island Picnic Pavilion on the Thursday prior. All are welcome to attend. We'll supply the food. Bring yourselves and beverage of choice.
On the Big Day (Friday) ceremony will start at 6:30pm at Brock House, we'll go right into cocktail hour and dinner at 8:00pm, so plan your other meals that day accordingly. After the wedding reception has be shut down, I invite everyone to bring their guitars, beautiful singing voices and popcorn shakers down to the beach for a sing-a-long. People may want to bring a change of clothes for this.
Also, I know the girls will be doing there hair and makeup all day on Friday so I thought maybe the guys would go play Par 3 golf in Stanley Park.
No official present opening on Saturday but we'll probably meet somewhere for brunch for all those interested. It will probably be "The Smoking Dog Bisto" 1889 West 1st Ave.
Call us if anyone has any questions..... 778-231-4234

Vancouver Plan
Rob and I are going to be in Vancouver on the 13th for a few days then back on the Thursday before the wedding. Just looking to plan a few things in advance. Hey, I'm not sure if there's a gift opening on Sat but if there isn't, anyone interested in finding a place to play paintball/lasertag? Just a thought.
Nothing new here in Vegas, I absolutely miss Canada. The dogs are... well they are the rulers of the house. Checkers finds and chews anything that isn't bolted down/locked up/pushed to the back of the cabinet. Porter is still a grumpy old man and Sparky, well Sparky just is the best dog that ever lived! The only news I have is that we're heading down to Mexico in Sept to get the condo ready for renters. Ya, that and a little bit of tequila ;).
Anyway, really miss everyone from back home and can't wait to see everyone... wait, now that I'm living in the US I should say, "can't wait to see y'all"
Take Care

Clarabelle and Charly - masterfully blasted!!
Clarabelle and Charly - where are you? GONE!!!! FINITO!! ADDIOS!! BLASTED FROM SPACE....with special Buzz lazers! Or as I stated in the meeting with the Doctor today......Mom is Cancer "F&*^%ing FREE!!!!Just to be clear......Mom is CANCER FREE!! No more cancer is detected in her body. Bone scan rocked, CT scan supreme and did I mention Mom looks MARVELOUS!!
On my way home tonight, I kept thinking how can I eloquently write about this news! Should I start with some of the positive signs which have been evident over the past few days. Signs, such as finding dimes instead of pennies (do we all know about the pennies)? Well everytime Mom or Nan O are looking for strength or just a hug they glance down to find a penny. This penny represents a Hello from Dale, the Angel which has sent extra power our way by finding dimes lately. Or was it the song this morning as I jumped into my car to pick up Mom for her appointment - Bee Gees, Staying Alive....yet again! The signs, the love, the support, the prayers, the HOPE from family and friends have contributed immensely in this journey.
So should I continue with the stories of the day - not today..... I just want to say THANK YOU!

Dustin Darrell
Jen and Darrell are anxious to get their little man home (which should be next Wednesday). Jen is getting pretty tired with 12 hour stays at the hospital and then getting up to pump through the night. I know, I know, "too much information", but I want to keep you informed. Jen is a very relaxed mom which makes her baby very content . Only fathers and grandparents can visit Dustin so I'm able to rock and cuddle my darling grandson. I am madly in love with him and I haven't said that since I saw Paul Newman in "The Sting". Uncle Jason and Auntie Nic have to wait till Dustin gets home to meet him, but we keep them posted.
Question: Why can't I get my name on the blog followers and Danny has his on twice?

Shakenbake Returns
Sorry I haven't been posting lately but I've had a few health problems of my own and didn't want to bring any negative energy to the blog. Also things have not gone well with CBC ever since they had a contest to replace the Hockey Night in Canada theme song and I suggested "Wang Dang Sweet Poontang" by Ted Nugent. Some people are so up tight.
I saw a great political cartoon in the paper today. It was the unveiling of a statue to commemorate the opening of Vancouver's way over budget convention center. When they pulled off the curtain it was a statue of our Premier with his head up his arse. I choked on my muffin.
Pat. My thoughts and best wishes are for you. It is hard to put it into words (howda guy say it) but rest assured I am pulling for you and think of you often. And Shirley some men are turned on by women with no front teeth so this could be a plus.

The Baby Has Dropped
Jason and Nicole are arriving home from Hawaii today. They won't want to get off the plane.
My only news is that I broke my bridge and while missing your two front teeth is really cute when you're six. Not so cute when you're sixty two.
I hear Pat is doing so much better. I agree with Lisa. Keep those medical books away from Dar.
C'mon Pat we can't heal ourselves.

Lisa here finally!
Finally got a computer for myself so I can enjoy this blog. Hope things are going well with you Auntie Pat, our thoughts are with you always.
We desparately need you feeling healthy as Mom (Darlene) has been our go-to for medical advise and she keeps going on and on about green napkins. So please, get well enough to wrestle the medical books out of Mom's hands and save us all!!!!

Pat - Winning/ Cancer - Doesn't Have a Prayer
At first, I thought this treatment must be like running over yourself while you're driving your ATV, but only Uncle Nick knows how that feels. Thank you for that memory Nick, it always makes me laugh out loud.
My pregnant daughter is about 5 or 6 weeks away from making me a gramma. She's still working and enjoying the town of Okotoks. Her plan is to work till the beginning of April. Jason and Nicole are going to Hawaii for the spring break. Looking out my window at the snow, Hawaii sounds heavenly.

The Bernhardsen's are alive and well
Everyone else in our family is doing well. I was kind enough to bring a flu back from Calgary so Dave and I spent the last two weeks fighting this - thank you Jesus for two bathrooms. Lisa and the boys are well. David Jr. has been off work a lot this last six weeks. When the temperature rises above (I forget) they are not allowed to work. He phoned for sympathy but with the winds howling around our door, the snow backed up on the patio and the flu doing us in - sorry not much sympathy here.
Pat and John we think of you daily. Pat we know you are suffering but with experience, we also know how hard all this is on John. Jackie you have been a gift thru all this. Pat - you have always been the one to go to for help with medical concerns and now we all feel so helpless that we cannot do more for you. I always think of prayers as butterflys - watch this spring you will see so many of them - that is the O'Hara's in action.

Thanks for the cancer journey! REALLY!!
Whoo getting a bit to serious - enough of that!
Nan had spent a few days in the hospital. Now she was sent to rest and receive oxygen BUT no rest was had due to the "blue housecoat stalker". Now this blue houseoat stalker or "bHoski" for short just lurked the halls for attention - Nan's attention! While visiting Nan in the hospital - the bHoski must have travelled 15 times past Nan's hospital room. Sure the Hospital isn't that big but those lurking eyes and stalling steps seemed a bit eerie. So to allow for some well deserved rest - Nan was discharged on Thursday and bid a fond farewell to the bHoski. Nan is feeling better with no oxygen needed at home.
So - about our week of chemo! Interesting - yes! Fun-filled - of course! Stories to blog about - absolutely!!
It was our first day of chemo (we were welcomed back into the room which we were evicted from previously) and curling was on. Now to some this is an important event - ok we understand - pleasant "sport", child friendly, nap worthy...kind of like golf! So we continue to chatter during the 2 hours of one game then it ends.....we glance around the room and spot the remote control. Why - well The View starts at 11a.m. and the room was filtered with many women. Little did we realize that there was a "remote CONTROL guy" who was not willing to share. He was approached by a lovely lady who asked to change the channel...his reply "I am in control and we will watch what I want". You know all I could think of was, any disease can be healed - but not every person. Not everyone is willing to expend the effort required to change their life in a way conducive to reestablishing health......he will continue to live a very lonely, miserable life. My heart aches for him.
Now through our time at the Cancer clinic we have had the pleasure to meet many angels along the way. Some simple gestures such as ensuring we get early appts to coincide with radiation or others such as a nurse named Jane. Jane is very special to us! She has provided Mom with information, tips and tricks and just plain niceness. But this one day, Jane was having a bad day....which was unnoticeable to us. Mom commented to her that she was born to be a nurse, so helpful and so caring. After some time had passed, Jane came back and said "God noticed I was having a bad day and he sent an angel - the angel was Mom! Even while dealing with cancer - Mom has a purpose - a journey for others to share with her!
Thank you all for sharing this journey with Mom and Dad. Your love thoughts and prayers are working and Clarabelle and Charly continue to fade away!!
All this chatter about Mom and still many questions I am hoping will be answered through the blog. How is Sadie? How was Hawaii Dan, Nathan and Thomas? Kelly, how is the job search - heard you might be in Calgary soon for a visit? Heard some info about Uncle Nick but will let Nick Jr. or Maureen share the news? Dale and Rob, please tell us about your Mexico trip? Rick, are you in Mexico or Hawaii? Jay, thanks for asking about the bloggers - no GFC allowed.
Take care to all.....thanks for all the support!
Hugs,
Jac

Pat I hope all is well. We are thinking of you guys up north!

Update from Devon
I spoke to John today and he said the doctor gave her an intervenous as Pat was becoming dehydrated. She has difficulty swallowing. He also has a standing order for Pat to receive intravenous sustenance as she requires it. This will be given at the Devon Hospital thus reducing the time her and John have to be on the road.

Sadie is sick
Given the strength of the prayers of this O'Hara clan, maybe we can muster up some prayers for Sadie.
On a bit of a lighter note Nick Sr. had his licence renewed for another year. My only question is who gave him the test? Just kidding!
I'm looking forward to seeing all at the wedding in June!

Glad to Be Back
Jackie, I really appreciate your updates on your mom. They are informative and enjoyable. That must be an O'Hara record to get kicked out of chemo. Way to go, Pat!
Jen and Darrel start birthing classes this week. (I don't know how to spell that other word for the classes). Two and a half months to go until we meet our brand new baby. Soooo exciting.

Keep moving forward....down the hall to the corner!
To begin a quote from Sharon Bray, "when we repress emotions and silence our stories, we weaken our ability to heal". Why might this quote be the take off point for the blog story - well Mom and I were escorted from the quiet chemo room to the back corner of another more segregated room. Let me explain - it was Day 2 of chemo and we were privileged to meet many others in the chemo room. To our liking was a lady, Cathy was her name and she saw we were having too much fun and decided to join in. Now to add Cathy to the mix meant the stories got sillier and the laughter consumed the entire room. A gentleman, who was scheduled for chemo a bit later, walked into the chemo room and asked "I'll have what they are having!" Of course you do get a couple of people who are reminiscent of Peter from Panorama, who don't really "get" the O'Hara/Maddison sense of humor and it only takes one to try and turn the lights out!
So as we entered Chemo for the third day, we saw "Peter". We casually smiled and checked in......that's when we were greeted with OHHHH, you will be receiving chemo in the other room today! We wondered, did Peter not want us in the same room? We were puzzled as asked "Why, per say?" The nurse stammered and said, "A nurse has called in sick - so we will have to remove you from this room!" We were escorted to the next room and TOLD to sit in the farthest, most secluded back corner - was it so we wouldn't cause a ruckus! Guess we showed them - the laughter and the stories followed us and we met some more great gigglers in the back corner! Not really sure how many more rooms they can send us too! I did hear only 4 chemo rooms were in the hospital.....we will christen them all!!!
But seriously we did meet with Dr. Chiu and Dr. Yee, news is Clarabelle and Charly continue to diminish in size. Mom is tolerating chemo and radiation well. She is a bit more fatigued this second cycle but spirits are continuing to soar. Dad has been such a trooper through this and continues to take Mom to radiation each and every morning - Bravo Dad!! Now sure,we all have our down times, but the rule is "5 minutes to feel blue" then that's it - move on and embrace the journey!

Las Vegas Baby
-Uncle Dan, I'm really looking forward to the wedding this summer, and seeing everyone there. If Lyndsey's (sp?) ma and pa managed to survive a night of Robb's martini's they should be fine with the rest of us.
- Uncle Robb, I don't ever recall the Red Sonja wig, or the outfit. It does give me interesting images. I have to agree with the matching the wig to the mood. Like a fashion accessory.
- Lora and I just got back from a trip to Vegas visiting Dale and Rob. It was a great visit, and they were great hosts (no martini's though). We did some of the usual stuff (casinos and walking the strip), and I must say Vegas never disappoints with its variety of just plain weird people. We did go and see the Tournament of Kings, and I definately recommend it. Anyways, it was a great visit and Dale said he would be more than happy to get Dr. Phil tickets for any of the Aunts/Cousins who are heading that way.
- Just a quick update on my Dad. Not really much to update. He gets tired quickly, and is not doing too much. Mom and Dad will be visiting the cardiologist this month for the two month (after the attack) exam. Not much is expected from this as the cardiologist has already said that they will not do any intrusive (surgery) procedures. This will be more of a maintenance visit, and to make sure that the medications are stabilizing him.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at the wedding. Take Care All, and if anyone is coming through Edmonton/Sherwood Park and needs a place to stay give me a call.
Nick Jr.

Good Hair Day
Having worn many wigs over the years for my various costumes such as Red Sonja I must say I actually prefer them over what the Lord did or didn't give me. May I suggest a variety of wigs to match your mood of the day or your wardrobe much in the same way you would choose your shoes. I have always been partial to a flame red mullet for that edgey look and would suggest this model for days when you want to scare the living hell out of Clarabelle and Charley. Cancer cannot stand up to a woman with a flaming red mullet. You might even be asked to make a cameo appearance on "Trailer Park Boys" or "House".
Kelly I am sorry to hear about your layoff and wish you the best with your job search. If there is anything we can do to help you have but to ask. You are a very talented guy and I hope the perfect job awaits you. One door closes another opens.
We had a terrific time with Donna and Mike and Joan and Dan. Thanks for the dinner Nathan and Lynd's. Those Polish Vodka Martini's were over the top and my apologies for any inappropriate remarks I may or may not have made. As if I can remember.
TAFN, (that's all for now)

Vancouver -Victoria
The New and Improved Radiating Foxy Mamma
Yes, you heard it here the Clarabelle and Charly are decreasing in size! Whoo Hoooo - must be all the love and attention sent Mom's way (except for the brief fainting spell to borrow some of the thunder). Mom attended her appointment with the flamboyant Dr. Chiu on Tuesday. He is so special - we just love him! Of course he does have an issue with stethoscopes - ok I'll tell you a story.......he is of a slight stature, loves cashmere sweaters (blue color today) and as the nurses refer to him as a brilliant individual. Today he had a bothersome stethoscope draped around his neck and dangling....well you know where. He went to get up and rung his dingle balls. To recover he sat eloquently in his seat, crossed his legs (spoke a wee bit higher) and proceeded to answer more questions. Mom and I, being not quite as professional , giggled our way through...not laughing at him just rejoicing at all the great news heard previously...ya right!!!
So before all the giggles with the stethoballsy, Dr. Chiu had informed Mom that the brain scan didn't show anything. Of course being an O'Hara/Maddison we all get where that sentence landed. Dr. Chiu meant that no cancer was detected in the brain......he wasn't referring to the lack of sense of direction issues or menopausal lapses which have occurred in the past, present and for sure in the future! He proceeded to talk about recent bloodwork which did show a decrease in her neutrophils. To interpret - this would mean no chemo this week - just postponed until next week. This is not to be interpreted as a setback, moreso as the chemo is working - getting the good and bad cells out!
Mom continues with her radiation for the next 25 days consequetively (sp?-no spell check darn) and with the radiation and chemo combination had been dealing with some hair loss. Now I did worry about sharing this story but I did receive the "gitter done" and ok from Mom. So guess where we went - to the hair salon. Mom had decided today was the day to shave her head. Did I mention Ryan was with us today! Wasn't sure how receptive he would be but one of his first comments was that he could hardly wait for Show and Share......and he could tell the story of how he watched his Nan get her head shaved.....can't beat that!! So after the hair was gone and the wig was selected she twirled around and WOW.....she looks marvelous!!! Made me want to shave my head and get a wig. This hairdo is so flattering and just perfect....I hope to post pictures soon. This new hairdo even fooled Nan and Auntie Moe.
We met at Southgate and Auntie Moe quickly said "Pat I love your hair" and Nan said "Yes". Now we didn't mention it was a wig and had set up the story previously. The story was that I had arrived and had styled and colored it this morning. Auntie Moe asked if I could style hers and she really loved it! Of course if she wanted to - I could borrow the clippers! So Mom, Ryan and I played along but I just couldn't lie to my Nan anymore.....we told them it was a wig. Truly they couldn't believe it! Mom just looks so pretty!!
So we ventured back to Devon - after a bit of shopping and had a lovely supper prepped by Uncle Nick and cooked by Auntie Moe. For dessert, cake and ice-cream (with no sugar for the diabetics)! Thank you for the fantastic meal and company! Loads of laughs as Auntie Moe plans to redecorate her living room.......was inspired by her visit with Dale and Rob.
Ryan and I decided to head back to Red Deer and venture up next week for the chemo fun! Rick arrived today for a brief visit as he was going to take a chemo shift as I ventured off to a hockey tournament in Lethbridge. Turns out, Evan won't be playing this weekend due to a concussion sufferred at the Ponoka tourney last weekend....the fun never ends. So with Evan not playing - he will head north with his Dad and Ryan and I will poke our way back to Devon and keep Uncle Rick busy for Friday!
Thank you everyone for all the well wishes and support!
Hugs,
Jacquie
P.S. Just checked the westjet website and there is a seat sale to Vancouver for June. Works out to $250ish return from Edmonton. Great deal for us non-driver types! Mom and I will book very soon!
Not-so-good news from the Coast

Well, Mother ended her 10 -day Vegas tour without a Dr. Phil incident (no thanks to all of you... and you know who you are). Nick and Lora are here right now and both Rob and I are enjoying the family visits.
Hope all is well with everyone up North!

Tidbits - love this blog!
......Dale you are so sweet to offer to take your mom to Dr. Phil. Next time we are in Vegas - can you take me too? Planning another gals weekend very, very soooon!!
......What else is happening on your Vegas trip, Auntie Moe...great shopping at the outlet mall!
..... spelling of my name - here's the story - started in Junior high (kind of an identity issue) I would change up my name every semester. Teachers new to ask me what I was to be identified by THIS year. Name changes included Jackie, Jacqueline, JacLin, Jacklyn etc. I guess Jacquie was the last one to stick - probably Grade 12 (when the fog cleared - or has it?)
.....Jay - who knew we were all related to O'Bama - cool.
.....Linen closets - when Ryan visits.....he does check...just ask Nan!
Now some short updates. Just talked to Mom on the phone! She sounds better than ever. Mom had her MRI done on Monday. I did call her to wish her a Happy MRI day.....sung a bit out of tune!. No news is great news on that homefront! Next week radiation begins on Monday, Tuesday and chemo/radiation combo on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Tuesday's plan after radiation is to venture off to Southgate for a tad bit of shopping - I will try to keep up! Love to meet anyone there for coffee Tuesday afternoon (before Dr. Phil).
So I have been struggling with telling the boys. Are they old enough to handle the information? Are they going to be sad? Can they cope? Through many hours of deliberation and emails of information from Mom who spoke to Linda, who has this friend etc. We decided to tell the boys. Through positive thoughts and tons of deep breaths we felt it was important to tell them so they wouldn't wonder why I leave the house for a few days every so often. Last night we told both the boys - Evan was quiet and wanted to read the Blog. He giggled and said you fainted again mom!! Ryan pipes up and stated - well at least she doesn't have Alzheimers because with Cancer they can cure it!! He is so DAMN right! Love my boys!
Just for some other information - Evan is playing in a tournament in Ponoka this weekend. Mom and Dad hope to come out to a Sunday Game - everyone is invited - great hockey to watch! No banners or horns at Evan's request though! I will post the times as soon as they find out where they place.
Hugs a bunches,

O'Bama!!!!
Sorry Dan, you're right. I've been negligent with my lack of posting.. so I thought it's time I post something to lift our Irish spirits up (they seem up already though!).
So without further adieu... I present you, President Barack O'Bama.

Nan's Note
I'm glad everyone has figured this thing out. It's so nice to read the O'Hara Grapevine.
Well it was a beautiful day. I went with John and Pat to Leduc. We did a little shopping and had coffee at Tim Horton's.
Maureen, I called Nick today and he is doing fine.
Well I hope everyone has a nice week.

Projects & Plans
Shakenbake - That is not torment, that is love. (no wonder I'm divorced)
Dan - Thanks for clearing up the IMO mystery. I just got a cell phone a few days ago so I'm struggling to catch up with new technology and letters instead of words.
Pat sent me a fistful of crosswords and I called to thank her. She's been sending them to me for the past year but I didn't expect to receive any at this time as I feel she has other things to think about. But that's Pat. "Git'erdone. She talked about the chemo and the radiation, but she also talked about her projects and plans. Kinda makes ya think. . . All she has going on and she continues to look beyond this cancer inconvenience.

Dear Eye Candy
Just a short post to say that I think about you every day and fondly remember all the torment you and your sisters have put me through over the years. How Darlene made a bath for me in a tin tub on the kitchen floor up in Jasper and told me the real bathtub was broken so I could use this backup tub and they promised they wouldn't peek. And how you, Shirley and Linda all turned down the beautiful salmon I had cooked for you because they were too full or didn't really like salmon or had suddenly developed an alergy to fish. The list is too long to post. Anyhow keep the positive energy flowing everyone. We're all in this together and Dale your dog named Sparky. Is it a Basset hound by any chance?

Questions & Thoughts
I have been enjoying this blog and thought I should start to contribute.
Pat and Jacquie, thank you for the updates. Pat we think about you often and wish you a healthy recovery. Pat , John, Jacquie, Rick, Joe please call if there is anything we can do to help.
Reading through all the blogs to date brings a few questions and thoughts to mind;
- I knew Rob's name was spelled Robb but I didn't know Jackie's name was spelled Jacquie.
- Jacquie, when Rick was in town with his light jacket was it the infamous light baby blue sports jacket by chance?
- Where is Jay with his "insane thoughts"? We are waiting.
- Thank you Robb for the song of the month "Numa Numa"....What is your next selection?
- Shirley are you now telling me thongs are not footwear. I guess that explains the strange looks I get each summer when I walk into shoe stores asking if they sell thongs. Why didn't you tell me this sooner.
- Dale, Dr Phil? really?
- Robb your messages are getting a little too techy. I had to google IMO from your last post. Yeah sure once you know what it stands for its obvious but there are a number of possibilities:
Idiopathic Massive Osteolysis (Gorham's Disease)
International Maritime Organization
International Mathematical Olympiad
International Meteor Organization
International Meteorological Organization
International money order
International Muslims Organization
Internet Mail Only
Irish Medical Organisation (a labor union)
The word ‘Imo’, of which only the first letter is capital, may also refer to:
A Japanese language slur equivalent to "country bumpkin" (Lit. Potato)
And finally IMO
In My Opinion – Internet slang

Linen closet & other stuff
I've just experienced the highlight of my week! I had a beautiful phone conversation with my sister, Pat. That was like a shot of adrenaline and now I'm fired up to add some adventure to my life. So today, we're rebuilding our linen closet. Why a linen closet? Well, Dan & Joan will be visiting this week and obviously that's the first place they are likely to look...duh.
Jackie, I was thinking of you today and I pictured a juggler. A home, 2 kids in several sports, a job, driving back & forth to Devon/ Edmonton and the driving force behind O'Hara communications. Thank you so much! You Rock!
Greetings from Vegas
Seriously, we think of you guys and everyone in Canada often and miss you terribly.
Now, I have to go. It's 6AM an the police are just dropping Mom off at the front door.

Las Vegas......
Boy that was quite a trip. John had been given very strict instructions to be at our house at 6 AM to take me to the airport. I WOULD BE SITTING ON THE DOORSTEP, WAITING.
John arrived. There were no lights on. After waiting about 2 min., he ran the door bell as only John can ring a doorbell.
It was 6 AM and not a creature was stirring.
Once John woke us up, I moved. Within 15 min I was dressed and in the truck heading to the airport.
There was no waiting around for that plane to take off.
You know, getting to the airport is kind of good. The line ups are not so long and the attendants are really anxious to get you through and onto the plane.
I know my mother will not believe this but the plane took off 10 minutes early and I was on it.
I haven't upacked yet so don't know what I may be missing. Oh, well.
I hope you aren't pregnant.
BUT when the O'Hara's get behind you look out. Your prayers got us thru David's illness and then cancer and so many times it was just knowing that I could pick up the phone and call Pat and she would walk me thru the next step. I am surprised Pat - with all my medical knowledge - you haven't asked me to provide you with advice. You never asked to borrow any green napkins - and they have been known to have great healing powers.
All kidding aside - I am so sorry this has happened to you. You have helped all of us so many times. I know you will come out of this a stronger and different person. If you need anything - please call.
Also would everyone please call Mom and tell her I FINALLY got on. She has mentioned a FEW TIMES that EVERYONE has entries except me. Who would of thought my Mother would be giving me computer advice. She said - it can't be that hard. Boy that really came back to haunt me over the past few days - but I refused to call her and ask what I was doing wrong - I think I was afraid she could tell me and then what?
Clarification
Just to be clear in my post regarding the spelling of my name. This was just my attempt at humour which I think is important especially during serious times. It lightens things up and brings the pressure down IMO. There is no frustration on my behalf and never has been and overreaction seems unnecessary. I never expected or asked for an apology and as far as I am concerned one is not necessary. I'm over it so lets move on.

Oh me, Oh my!
Can you tell that I am skirting around the news from todays Radiation consult appt. Here we go.........first the drive to Tim Hortons where I met Mom and Dad. Of course I was an hour early - due to the last fiasco with the roads. Nothing really stops a Maddison/O'Hara when they truly focus on the task. Mom looked fantastico and Dad smiled (I brought him cookies - recipe in Ma Ernst cookbook - Tollhouse cookies divine). Upon our arrival - yes another hour early for our appointment but we had a chance to just hang out and visit. LOVE those moments! Then off to the Radiation consult.
No we weren't greeted by stripes and plaids but a more in-your-face Doctor. Really! He was so close to Mom she could count his nose hairs - only 47 in each nostril and he didn't blink! He did have nice skin though! So he proceeded to inform Mom of her Radiation regime - 25 days straight with a whammy of Radiation. These Radiation treatments are to begin around Jan 28. Apparently the side effects again are minimal due to the wonderful world of drugs prescribed during treatment.
Now to the Oh Me, Oh My.......well you know Mom has been getting alot of attention lately - kind of lost my Princess status - Damn! So to regain the focus - yep fainted in the Dr. office! How freakin embarrassing (but worthwhile for the blog). Rather humorous Mom is there for consult but I needed the exam bed! Yes, sure know how to get a party started in the hospital - just faint. Yes, yes family I am ok........just had 2 cups too many of coffee, didn't eat breaky and well didn't take my iron pills! Lesson learned!
So after the drama and consciousness regained Mom went off to her CT scan, and 15 minutes later she was done! Of course she wanted to venture off to the shopping mall but I had to scurry back for a basketball game and hockey practice! Shopping for sure next time - Jan 27 coffee at Southgate Bay coffee shop around 1:00 p.m.- all are welcome! Next on the schedule is the MRI scan on Monday then back to Chemo on Jan 27.
We continually thank everyone for their thoughts, love and prayers during this journey! Keep blogging - should anyone be chatting with Dan and Joan, or Dave and Darlene please, please ask the families to sign up if interested. Love to hear from Auntie Angie too!
Hugs a bunches,
Jacquie
p.s. Auntie Mo, Nick and Lora have a wonderful time in Vegas! Wish I was coming too - I missed a few stores when I was there!

Thank you, my wonderful family!
As Jacquie has said, it really does have some highs and lows and WOW those steroids do pack a punch. It really is interesting though, when you get together with other patients and we all kinda have the same story. Like, why me? I never smoked......well, OK. But it really is a little community in the Cancer Clinic, and the staff and patients couldn't be nicer.
It was also a huge reality check for John and I. For some reason, you think that you'll both be around forever, and that things can wait to be said or done. That's not true. Do it now!
I must say that this was a wonderful Christmas, with the kids, John and Nan doing everything from cooking dinner to putting away the Christmas tree, all I had to do way hold my new grandaughter. Thanks so much Kelly for getting this going. I check it every day, and I love it.
We have so many special Angels in our family and we are truly blessed. Thanks guys!

Hello ..Hello... I can't hear Numa Numa
Finally . . . . .
I am not of the computer generation. I am of the generation where milk was delivered by horse and wagon, thongs were footwear, rapping was talking and gay was happy. So I'm pretty thrilled to be blogging.
I love being informed every day of what's new with the family. I love the Pat updates.

Numa Numa HEY
Another Energizer Patsy update! So we went for the second day of chemo fun and Mom decides to make a list (while getting her steroid dose - this is another happy place - kind of the numa numa feeling).....we all know about Patsy's lists! Yes AFTER Chemo - we went shopping at Southgate.....for 3.5 hours. Now usually I am the shopper and have to drag others along on my quests - total role reversal today. Miss Chemo was radiating through stores and just glowing with purchases! I finally had to reel the fishing line in and ask for permission to return to Devon. Then we get in the car and what is playing on the radio but "Stayin Alive" by the Bee Gees......well mom and I decide to boogie our birthing hips and sing out loud!! Upon our return to Devon we were greeted with a lovely dinner - prepared by Dad! We both felt like this was a pamper us day! Chemo, shopping and supper was served! Actually supper was served 2 days in a row - the first night we had some superb hamburger soup made by Aunty Mo! When you visit Devon - suppers are covered between Mo and Dad - maybe a new catering business will develop! A gal could get accustomed to this kind of special treatment!
But seriously ( just for a moment) - receiving Chemo surrounded by marvelous nurses, in this wonderful facility is truly a blessing. The knowledge which is gained with every visit is so Numa, Numa! I truly treasure this journey that we are all on - the time that I have been able to share with my mom and dad is irreplaceable! Take an hour and just talk with one another - the stories are priceless!! OK - can't continue down that path - getting all mushy.
Now that was just our second day! Today we ventured through the third day - but tune in tomorrow as I believe the Numa song has departed and I must get some shut eye for tomorrow! Ryan is in an outdoor hockey tournament in Red Deer and Evan plays somewhere tomorrow - guess I better confirm times and places first.
Take care to you all,
Jacquie

Power through music...
You know how sometimes you get a song in your head and it just won't go away? This can be incerdibly incredably incredebly... really annoying or it can help you take your mind off of something even more annoying or disturbing. I would therefore like to recommend such a song to you Pat, or to anyone really that you can use to your advantage. It is one that Nathan sent to me and we both love it. It was done by some guys at UBC who he knows. Say no more. I use this song when ever I am in a position that I don't necessarily like such as a MRI (very claustrophobic). I have also used it to my advantage during my annual prostate exam which I am studying for right now and hope to pass. If you would like to hear this song the best version can be found by doing a Google search under "You tube ubc numa numa" but be warned it is catchy.
Shake and bake, baby...

Whooo hooo - Pat's in too!
So....about this chemo journey. It all started at 5:45 a.m. in a dreaded snow storm - I probably would have turned back to Red Deer but couldn't see any exit ramps - had to follow the big trucks who didn't lead me back home. Just followed the Big Guy in the sky!
Once at the hospital - well you know in the movies the chemo rooms are dreary, cold, barf bags all around and people crying......well it's not true. We were greeted by helpful cancer survivors who knew the look on a new face - of where the heck do we go? And to our surprise was a pack of happy-go-lucky nurses with such an aura about them. Yes, cheery lights and happiness eluded the entire day unit. Then the fun began.....really! Anti nausea meds were infused and then chemo. Mom had her barf bag ready but I kept telling her that was in the "olden" days! She didn't believe me - but she didn't need it! Ok she believed it when a lady beside her returned with chicken fingers and fries while receiving chemo. Mom's face - well priceless! Looking around the room at about 70 individuals receiving chemo - only 1 has lost her hair, others working on lap tops, watching movies or just networking with others who have been dealt this card! Mom is very lucky to have only one organ affected.....others there have 3 or 4 affected areas and have been LIVING WITH CANCER for 4, 7 even 18 years! Mom's chemo cocktail (baileys would be preferred) is of a lighter dose with fewer side effects. She will continue for the next 3 days and believe me this crossroads is the beginning of something new and wonderful for her. Just wait to here her new outlook!! SHE LOOKS MARVELOUS!!!!
Thanks to everyone who has joined this blog! So wonderful to be surrounded by loving family and friends!

Our Growing Blog
Go Team!!
To update, Mom has returned from her bone scan. No results yet but will keep you posted.
With the house empty and the Christmas chaos past now Mom and Dad can focus on the positive and just getting better. Of course, Dad is focused on laundry as he has been a tremendous help to Mom during the past week. We all know our husbands can do laundry but to actually witness the event - encouraging!
It is truly amazing how many families are affected by cancer moreso how many success stories are being shared. Mom starts her chemo on January 7. This will continue for 3 days and then to return on January 19 for the second cycle. Positive thoughts are certainly appreciated during this time and with the love shared amongst our family Clarabelle and Charly will be beaten!
Linda's showing off
So, Pat, there's lotsa good thoughts for you today when they do the bone scan.
And Rick, I really have been anxiously waiting to see a picture of my great-niece...Tess Frances Patsy Maddison. Did I get that right? You really should take some photos so she's not camera-shy like our Jack.
A final thought to everyone. I think it's time to stop holding our breaths and every so often, we should remember to breathe!! I just did it & it felt pretty good.
2009 should be a memorable year as we get together for another O'Hara wedding, circle dances and the joy of acting silly together!

Update from Jackie
Thanks to our computer genius Kelly who has graciously posted this webvine to keep us all updated. I hope that this site is used not only for updates on health but on all the other fun activities we wish to share. I will continue to keep everyone posted on the details, happenings and changes with my mom - our dearest Patsy. Through this website - she will be at ease knowing the information is being shared with those who mean the most to her. Emails are always appreciated to Patsy's house whereas phone calls can be a tad overwhelming.
First of all, Rick is pissed that she couldn't pick a warmer time of the year to get sick! His light winter jacket didn't suffice today as we ventured off to the Tom Baker Cancer Clinic at 7:30 a.m. - had to arrive early for our 9:30 appt because Nan said so (or was that Dad). After the initial tests we all walked into the Cancer Clinic expecting the worst news but to our surprise we were greeted with a "flamboyant" Dr. Chiu. He was dressed in stripes and plaids - couldn't help but notice. He examined Mom with a flick of his wrist and said ok this is what we are going to do. Mom starts her chemo and radiation treatments next week. The small cell cancer is located mostly in her left lung. This type of cancer is inoperable hence the chemo and radiation treatment. She will have two treatments next week then a rest period. She will return on Jan 27 for her second cycle. Mom will have a bone scan on Friday Jan 2 to see if the cancer has spread to her bones and a future MRI of the brain for the same reason. Mom's spirits are up and she truly did have one of the best Christmas's ever. We all love her very much and Clarabelle and Charly (we have named the cancer masses) really don't know who they are messing with - the combination of Maddison and O'Hara is a force to be reckoned with. Should I think of any other information which was gained today - I will continue to post! Please share this website with other family members and with other friends - Lord knows interesting events can be read about here! All our love is sent to our family this New Year and please continue to send your strength to our Patsy!
Love Jacquie
